Mike Wons, NTE's senior vice president and chief technology officer, has been named the transportation sector's CTO of the Year by InfoWorld Media Group, a division of IDG.

InfoWorld selected the winners after considering candidates from across the U.S. Selections were made upon reviewing the accomplishments of a distinguished group of CTOs nominated by a senior team of InfoWorld editors. The winners and their contributions are being featured in the current issue of InfoWorld magazine and will be recognized at this week's CTO Forum in San Francisco.

"Mike has made a remarkable impact on NTE since he joined our organization last year," said Jim Davidson, NTE's president and chief executive officer. "We knew he was doing an outstanding job, and we're delighted that InfoWorld recognized it, too. This award is a credit to the entire NTE team of technology engineers who are helping us reach new heights in using technologies to help address our customers' needs."

In the past year under Wons' direction, NTE has upgraded its technical infrastructure to the latest web enabling technology from Microsoft, Oracle and Sun/Solaris-based platforms; established an industry leading commerce and messaging architecture that handles thousands of electronic transactions for NTE's members; enabled new functionality for additional transportation modes; established new supply chain management tools for NTE customers; and established increased NTE visibility to its technology partners and systems integrators, including SAP, i2, CAP E&Y, KPMG and IBM. Since last October, hits to its Web site (www.nte.com) have quadrupled, now averaging more than 6 million hits per month.

"Mike Wons was selected as the leading CTO in the transportation sector because he has played a vital role during the past year in defining business strategies through technology across the board," said Michael Vizard, editor in chief, InfoWorld, InfoWorld Online and CTO magazine. "Our picks for the top vertical CTOs represent the ones to watch for continued groundbreaking advances in business and technology in the months ahead."

Before joining NTE last year, Wons was CTO for the B2B Group at Primedia, a $1.7-billion publishing conglomerate, and held a series of senior management positions in technology and logistics over his 13-year career with Waste Management, Inc. A resident of Naperville, IL, he is a graduate of the Kellogg Management Institute at Northwestern University's Graduate School of Management and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Governors State University.
